A fountain with drinkable water and a war memorial were built in the beginning of the 19th century at Charlton Church Lane. A few years later in 1925 Charlton House was opened to the public by the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich which came to possession of the house- its grounds were later opened and played the role of a public park.
